Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia and Social Security Disability

Schizophrenia, like other mental illnesses, can constitute a qualifying disability under Social Security Administration rules. However a diagnosis of schizophrenia does not in itself make you eligible for Social Security disability benefits. Your claim must demonstrate that your disability is severe enough that you are unable to work. For more information about qualifying mental disabilities, contact our Help Center. Our attorneys and staff will help you determine what steps to take next.

How we support a schizophrenia disability claim

A successful claim for Social Security disability benefits due to schizophrenia or another mental health disability will be based on a carefully constructed record of observations by medical providers, therapists, employers, and others. The Social Security Administration or administrative law judge will need to be convinced that the applicant's schizophrenia makes it impossible to work. Factors that will be considered are:

  • daily living: performing tasks such as cooking, cleaning, personal hygiene, and paying bills on time without reminders

  • social function: your ability to work with others, get along in social situations, and get along with those in authority

  • concentration: your ability to complete tasks without getting distracted

  • decompensation: your ability to cope with stress appropriately, not exploding or withdrawing

  • delusions, hallucinations, illogical thinking, or other symptoms of schizophrenia

It is very difficult for an applicant to successfully pursue a claim for schizophrenia. Our Social Security disability lawyers have extensive experience in assembling the necessary proof and presenting strong claims and appeals for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. In fact our SSDI/SSI lawyers have won over 8 out of 10 of our past cases.
