Social Security Disability Insurance Coverage
Co-Written by: Ronald D. Miller Esq.
Social Security Disability Insurance coverage pays a monthly stipend to qualified people who are disabled and unable to work and have paid into the program for a minimum amount of time. The amount of the stipend is determined by how much a qualified individual paid in to Social Security during the years in which they were working. Every year, the Social Security Administration sends each taxpayer in the United States an estimate of what their current Social Security benefits are. These statements itemize each year that the taxpayer has worked full time in a qualifying job, showing how much they have paid in and what benefits their contributions entitle them to. To qualify as disabled under current laws the Social Security Administration requires that a disabled adult must have a medically determinable mental or physical impairment that causes the inability to do any substantial gainful activity and, either, can be expected to lead to death, or has lasted or can be expected to last at least a year. In addition, widower benefits are paid to the surviving spouse of a qualified taxpayer if that taxpayer worked and paid into Social Security for at least five years, and the surviving spouse has become disabled within seven years of the taxpayer’s death. Benefits are determined according to the amount the taxpayer paid in during the years they worked. Benefits also extend to the divorcee of a deceased and qualifying spouse provided the divorcee has not remarried. Likewise, children of disabled parents and adults who have been disabled since childhood are eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance as long as one or both of their parents worked a qualifying job for at least five years and paid into social security. Once approved for Social Security Disability Insurance, you will also be automatically enrolled in and approved for Medicare benefits. These benefits are considered to begin two years after the onset of the qualifying disability. In the interim period, Medicaid is made available to the disabled.
