What qualifies a person as disabled? The Social Security Administration has defined a disabled adult as anyone 18 or older who has a medically determinable mental or physical impairment that causes the inability to do any substantial gainful activity and, either, can be expected to lead to death, or has lasted or can be expected to last at least a year. To qualify for SSDI you must meet the same medical criteria as for Social Security disability benefits, but in addition you must have paid into the program for a minimum amount of time. Adults who have been disabled since childhood are also eligible for SSDI provided they became disabled prior to the age of twenty two, never worked and one of their parents worked for at least five years and paid into Social Security. Children of adults with disabilities who are qualified for SSDI may also draw upon SSDI benefits as long as they are under eighteen or between the ages of eighteen and nineteen and currently enrolled full time in high-school.
